Teacher Assistants play a significant role in supporting the education of students in elementary and secondary schools. They support students and assist teachers as well as counsellors with teaching and other tasks. They may work with students who have special needs, English language learners, or those requiring extra academic support. Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants are usually employed in public and private elementary, secondary, and special needs schools and treatment centres. They also assist in students’ personal care and behavioral management.

  • Completion of a 10-month college program in educational assistance, teaching assistance, or other social science program.

Main Duties

Primary duties of Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants include:

  • Provide classroom support by assisting in preparation of teaching materials and lesson plans.
  • May help students with tasks such as reading, writing, and math, often through individualized instruction.
  • Provide assistance to students with special needs, including those with physical, intellectual, or behavioral challenges, using techniques such as sign language and remedial programs.
  • Supervise students during class activities, recess, or lunch breaks, and maintain classroom discipline.
  • Help students with their tasks during class, providing one-on-one or small group support under the classroom teacher’s supervision.
  • Monitor and record students' progress and report to teachers.
  • May prepare and set up educational tools (including electronic equipment such as projectors) and resources for teachers and students.
