Live-in Caregiver Program – Work and Settle in Canada
Canada has introduced various immigration pathways for those who wish to enter the country as caregivers. A caregiver acts to support children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities in the society at large. Recognizing the importance of this profession, the Canadian Government has designed several immigration programs to facilitate the entry of qualified caregivers. Whether you are an experienced caregiver looking for new opportunities or someone interested in starting a career in this field, we at Pretzel Immigration Private Limited are here to guide you through every step of the immigration journey.
Canada has a strong demand for caregivers, particularly in home care settings. Many families in Canada are looking for individuals to care for their loved ones, creating a steady need for caregivers across the country. By immigrating to Canada through one of the caregiver programs, you will not only have the opportunity to live and work in a safe and welcoming environment, but you will also be contributing to the welfare of Canadian society. The key benefits of immigrating as a caregiver include permanent residency, work-life balance, and opportunities for family reunification. Currently, Canada offers two pilot programs for caregivers:
- Home Child Care Provider Pilot: It allows qualified caregivers to work in Canadian homes, providing care to children under 18.
- Home Support Worker Pilot: This program is aimed at caregivers who provide personal care services to individuals with medical needs, seniors, or those with disabilities. The Home Support Worker Pilot allows workers to provide these services in private homes, group homes, or healthcare facilities.
Applicants who apply to these programs,
- need to have at least 24 months of full-time work experience in the occupation within the past 36 months,
- must demonstrate proficiency in English or French; CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) 5 or higher,
- should pass an admissibility check, may need to submit biometrics, medical exam, and police clearance certificate depending on your background, and
- must have one year of Canadian post-secondary education or the foreign equivalent.
Experience as a foster parent and housekeeper does not count in the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot respectively.
In addition, the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) was a previous program that allowed caregivers to live in their employers' homes. While this program was officially closed to new applicants in 2014, many applicants who entered it are still eligible to apply for permanent residency.
