The work of a plumber entails installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Requirements

• Must complete secondary school education.
• Must complete a 4-5 year apprenticeship program to be eligible for trade certification. Other than this, a candidate must complete a combination of over 5 years of work experience in trade and some courses in plumbing either high school, college, or industry courses.
• Must be licensed or certified by a provincial or territorial regulatory authority.

Main Duties

• Install piping systems for water, sewage, and heating including laying pipes, connecting fixtures such as sinks, bathtubs, toilets, and water heaters, and ensuring the system works properly.
• Read and interpret blueprints or technical drawings to determine the layout of the plumbing system in buildings.
• Use hand and power tools or machines to measure, cut, bend, and thread pipes.
• Inspect plumbing systems, and detect leaks, blockages, and other issues.
• Replace or repair old pipes, faucets, and fixtures.
• Use couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing, and welding equipment to join pipes.
• May install, maintain, or repair water heating systems, including boilers, water heaters, and radiant heating systems, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely.
